This doctoral thesis presents some circumstances that are part of the historical process of
colonial Paraguay, including the provincial conflicts. Events that occurred for diferente
reasons. In general, they would justify a practice of Jesuit temporality as well as the validity
of privilege policies based on ancient traditions. Mosto of the time, they reveal a series of
innaccuracies, both in the practical sense and in the application of those sentences. Exposed in
this way, and however unusual the outcomes may have been, the conflict episodes allow us to
better understand certain regional characteristics, oppositions and defenses of local identities.
Therefore, what we have are analyzes of passages that describe an intended and successful
“disorientation” through territories already consecrated since pre-colonial times and that
needed to go through a series of “cuts” until reaching “measurements” that would transmit an
identification of greater importance, while, properties. In order to better describe this reality,
our research took into consideration part of the land policy and its productive and territorial
development, that is, transformation, not as something that consolidated the purpose of
conquest, but that came to represent a symbolic reuse of power over places and non-places
that transmitted some importance to the indigenous people. It is no coincidence that the
complexity of ethnic groups in disputed lands will be a very present fator in the following
lines. By the way, what we describe contributes to an old discussion, which seeks to
contextualize the process of transformation of Guaranization by non-Guarani ethnic
minorities. In any case, what is precisely interesting in this thesis is to point out the possible
ethnic diferences, temporal and, above all, those that expose the atitudes that prevailed on
those occasions, since in practice the reductions occurred as a result of distinct historical
ethnicities that maintained active territories common memory. More precisely, it does not
seem unreasonable to recognize that behind the conception of conquest there continued to be
very original narratives that took into consideration the origin time that needed to be
overcome. For that reason, on many occasions, reductions perceived this type of control as a
chance to not only recover past rights but also to establish new measurements. Intensely,
some of them started to see those occasions as a possibility of expressing disapproval of the
reduction project. Over time, for each situation it was necessary to resort to evidence that
would justify the validity of their actions. Recognizing them in the course of some concerns
even allows us to reflect on the weight of those individualities. Finally, if we use the case of
provincial conflicts as if they were demonstrating the exhaustion of a historical narrative, it is
with the intention of considering that there were difficulties in the reduction project.

This work constitutes a study of black families in the post-Abolition period in southern Brazil and encompasses the analysis of the experiences of those born with free wombs in the city of Santa Maria da Boca do Monte, located in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul. It deals with the experiences of children born to enslaved mothers, born between 1871 and 1888 in that city and baptized by the Catholic Church, whose experiences were impacted by Law number 2.040, of September 28, 1871. It presents an analysis of the living conditions of these children and the families they started to form in the post-Abolition period, between the years 1890 and 1941, through civil and religious marriages and the creation of different family ties, analyzed by this research. The work uses as a theoretical-methodological contribution to microhistory and the onomastic method or research centered on names, located in different sources and contexts to trace collective trajectories, social relations and genealogies, combining the use of serial history, which allowed observe patterns, inconsistencies and singularities of collective and generational experiences between slavery and freedom. 532 children born from a free womb were located, of which 89 or 17% of the baptized children who survived to adulthood were found, when they started to form their own families, through the analysis of various civil-notary and parish records. Oral sources were also used, through Oral History as a method for reconstituting black families, their relationships and their memories of slavery and freedom. Thus, grandchildren and granddaughters of those born in Free Womb whose baptisms and marriages were located were interviewed. The results of this research point to original conclusions about the study of black families in the post-Abolition period, presenting reflections on their plural family organizations and their found kinships, their ways of naming, inheriting and bequeathing, living and inhabiting and, mainly, getting married.

This doctoral thesis is linked to the Memory and Cultural Heritage Research Area of the PPGH at UFSM. It aims to analyze the memory of the ecclesiastical movement Ação Católica in the Archdiocese of Santa Maria (RS), from 1930 to 1945, which concerns the strategies developed by social agents of the Catholic Church, who aimed, through social catholicism to find new roles for lay people in the context of the Church. The focus is about the performance of the Catholic clergy and the role of the ecclesiastical assistant, who exercised intellectual, moral and administrative authority in the organization of the lay people. The Catholic Church wanted to revitalize the hegemony of Catholicism, which historically had social, political and economic prominence in Brazilian history. To this end, we mapped the parishes that are part of the Archdiocese of Santa Maria, which are thirty-nine (39), in an area of 20.263 km², which indicates the scope of the research theme. Nineteen (19) parishes were selected for the research, because they hypothetically hold documents relating to Catholic Action, in the period defined in this study. Thus, three (03) parishes are located in Santa Maria and sixteen (16) are located in other cities in Rio Grande do Sul state. The parishes of Santa Maria are: Metropolitan Cathedral parish, Nossa Senhora da Conceição parish; Nossa Senhora das Dores parish and Santa Catarina parish. In the region covered by the Archdiocese, we highlight the parishes in the cities of: Cacequi, founded in 1935; Nova Palma (1919); Júlio de Castilhos (1883); São Sepé (1850); Vale Vêneto (1911); Jaguari (1915); Silveira Martins (1884); Ivorá (1918); São Vicente do Sul (1876); Dona Francisca (1934); Arroio Grande (1919); São Pedro do Sul (1882); Pinhal Grande (1942); Restinga Seca (1939); Tupanciretã (1920) and Formigueiro, in 1938. This research indicates the potential of the theme, since the records of the Catholic Action movement in the Archdiocese of Santa Maria inform how much the Archdiocese's articulations were in line with the policies of the Roman Church, highlighting civility, morality and the fight against the enemies of Church. These themes can contribute to understanding the influence of Catholic and religious social agents in the history of Rio Grande do Sul. The methodological strategy was developed based on documentary and bibliographic research and content analysis. Among the research results, we highlight the significant organization of lay people, to contribute to the appreciation and dissemination of the principles proclaimed by the Roman Apostolic Catholic Church.

This thesis aims to present a discussion about cinema in Revista do Globo between the years
1929 to 1950. Born in the city of Porto Alegre and having its first issue published in 1929, this
periodical circulated until 1967, when it ended its publications. activities. Owner of a modern
visuality that dialogued with the urban context where it was inserted, it represented/presented
not only the urban society of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, but also of several other cities
in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. its existence issues related to the local, national and
international context circulated through its pages. One of the subjects addressed in the pages of
Revista do Globo was cinema. In many ways it occupied a space that was small at the beginning,
but over the years it gained an important highlight. Having its own section within the structure
of the journal. Based on the importance of cinema as a representation of reality, as a way of
presenting social customs and reproducing cultural contexts. In this context, this thesis aimed
to analyze the cinema section of Revista do Globo from a historical perspective, examining the
reproduction of various aspects of the cinematographic universe. The general objective of the
thesis, to analyze with the perspective of the historian the way in which the theme of cinema
was reproduced in the pages of Revista do Globo was the great guiding element of the research.
One of the specific objectives was to add information and contribute to an expansion of the
historiography of cinema in Rio Grande do Sul and also, to a certain extent, in Brazil. Through
characters who wrote for the magazine. These characters were part of the history not only of
the periodical, but also of the arts in Rio Grande do Sul, thus contributing to a kind of group of
intellectuals being formed and strengthened through the social and cultural practices that they
maintained beyond the pages they wrote. about the movies. Finally, an attempt was made to
present these intellectuals who wrote for the magazine and who contributed to the emergence
of a specialized critique. If at the beginning they were seen by themselves as chroniclers, after
a certain period they already considered themselves film critics and their contributions
transcended the pages they wrote and created space for the emergence of study groups and the
Clube de Cinema de Porto Alegre. Contributing to the expansion of these people's personal
biography was also part of the research. It is expected from this thesis that elements may emerge
for an expansion and consolidation of the historiography of cinema in Rio Grande do Sul.
