Taylor Mason e a representação não-binária na mídia

Abstract

A non-binary gender identity refers to the portion of transgender people who, in addition to not identifying themselves with the gender assigned at birth, are also not perceived as inside the categories of man or woman. Therefore, non-binary is an umbrella term that includes other gender categories. Currently, the media representation of this identity is scarce and, due to the history of trans representation in cinema having permeated harmful notions, it is pertinent to discover how the media is portraying the non-binary figure, in this case through the character Taylor Mason, from the TV show Billions. It is intended to explore the concepts of the LGBTQIA + umbrella, stereotypes and their relationship with the media, which in turn impacts social representations. Finally, the analysis of Taylor's construction during its first appearances in the series with the intention of identifying how the series approaches non-binarity, its interaction with the environment and other people, as well as the implications for contributing or denying the representations on the topic. It is concluded that gender identity, in this TV show, is treated naturally, without a dramatic narrative, with respect to the pronouns chosen and with space for Taylor to have importance beyond gender issues.
