In Brazil, distributed generation is already seen as a constantly growing market, since the publication of the regulatory norm of the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) in 2012. However, there is no scientific knowledge on the main motivation of investors for the installation of a photovoltaic system. From this, the present article aims to present an analysis of the importance of the several motivations for the installation of microgeneration photovoltaic energy system of the residential class in Rio Grande do Sul. To reach the objective, questionnaires were used in 55 cities, obtaining a total of 114 respondents. The data treatment and the results analysis of the indicators are motivated by the decentralization of the generation of energy, by the protection of the environment and by the investment opportunity.por
