Elas (re)existem: a representação das mulheres travestis e transexuais no jornalismo

Abstract

This paper investigates the representation that journalism makes of transvestite and transsexual women through the Tribuna do Paraná, G1 and CartaCapital portals. In parallel to this, it tries to understand what are the short and long term consequences of the representations made and what they show us in relation to the situation of these women in Brazil. For the investigation, an analysis protocol was created and applied in the twenty-three materials collected for the study. We believe that journalism can, in addition to reporting, denounce the daily violence that LGBT people face for being who they are and contribute to the cycles of oppression being broken. The results show that journalism, in general, is concerned with representing transvestite and transsexual women in their narratives. However, this process is still in the embryonic process; many mistakes are made in terms of treatment and approach related to these women.
