O Projeto Preservação e Difusão da Memória Sonora no Acervo da Rádio Universidade da UFSM envolve preservação e acesso ao conteúdo do acervo da Rádio Universidade composto por discos de vinil e fitas magnéticas, as quais são gravações de programas e entrevistas divulgados pelo veículo. Simplificar o acesso ás informações para pesquisadores e acadêmicos está entre os principais objetivos do projeto, por meio da produção de instrumento de pesquisa para acesso à informação através da descrição do documento digitalizado e somado índices impressos com a descrição dos assuntos e conteúdos, garantindo assim a preservação permanente dos documentos sonoros originais, viabilizando a pesquisa dos áudios e principalmente a preservação do acervo sonoro através de medidas de conservação e restauração dos materiais, beneficiando o próprio acervo e atendendo as demandas dos pesquisadores. O processo é composto por etapas, onde a primeira e a segunda se constituem no diagnóstico, na descrição e na classificação dos arquivos sonoros, seguido da ação de higienização e armazenamento. A descrição documental dos documentos sonoros é um processo lento e minucioso, que inclui a audição, revisão, correção e complementação de dados. Após esse processo o documento está pronto para ser transposto para outra mídia, para o acesso e a pesquisa. As atividades desenvolvidas no acervo da Rádio Universidade UFSM estão sob coordenação de arquivista do Departamento de Arquivo Geral (DAG) e são desenvolvidas por acadêmicos bolsistas. Nos principais resultados até o presente momento estão os índices produzidos - dos 6.854 discos de vinil e das 701 fitas magnéticas de rolo. Em 2015 foram acrescidas ao acervo da fitoteca 293 fitas magnéticas do Programa Antes que a Natureza Morra produzido pelo professor James Pizarro, programa que foi ao ar durante 26 anos, considerado uma referência para ambientalistas gaúchos e que não estavam no acervo da rádio. O recolhimento deste acervo para o Arquivo Permanente do DAG está ocorrendo gradativamente, à medida que as fitas são digitalizadas (em formato Waveform Audio File (WAV), recomendado para reformatação de documentos sonoros). Nesta etapa já foram digitalizadas 206 fitas magnéticas.
