Abstract
Este estudo teve como objetivo principal avaliar se a restrição externa foi um limitador do
crescimento econômico dos países que fazem parte do bloco econômico denominado BRICS.
Discutiu-se, portanto, as principais teorias da literatura referente ao arcabouço teórico do
crescimento puxado pelas exportações. Ademais, é apresentada as peculiaridades dos países que
formam o BRICS. Para analisa-los, foi realizado um teste empírico a partir da lei de Thirlwall
entre 1996 a 2018. A partir da análise econométrica, concluiu-se que apenas dois países
apresentaram restrição de crescimento pelo balanço de pagamentos: China e Índia.
