dc.description.abstract | Coatis are omnivorous mammals belonging to the order Carnivora, with diurnal
habits, which are distributed in several countries in South America, and in almost all
regions of Brazil. Anatomophysiological evaluations through echobiometry and
ophthalmological tests are important to carry out a complete evaluation of the
eyeball. Establishing physiological reference values of this species for
ophthalmological tests is essential for the diagnosis of ocular disorders. The present
study carried out in the species Nasua nasua from captivity describes the
ophthalmological parameters evaluated by means of the type 1 Schirmer tear test
(STT), measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) by rebound, evaluation of central
corneal thickness (CCT) by ultrasonic pachymetry (UP), B-mode ultrasonography
(US) and indirect ophthalmoscopy. The anterior chamber depth (AC), lens axial
length (LL), vitreous chamber depth (VC) and bulb axial length (BL) of both eyes
were evaluated by echobiometry. All procedures were performed with clinically
healthy animals, from captivity in a Fauna Keep located in the municipality of Santa
Maria and the Municipal Zoo of Cachoeira do Sul, in Rio Grande do Sul,
contemplating a total of 12 coatis. After physical and chemical containment,
ophthalmological tests and biometry were performed. As a result, mean values
(mean ± standard deviation) were obtained for STT of 2.29 ± 0.85 mm/min, for
rebound IOP of 8.22 ± 1.97 mmHg, for CCT of 324.29 ± 18 .01 µm, and for the
echobiometric measurements the values found were 1.48 ± 0.08 mm for AC, 4.09 ±
0.09 mm for LL, 3.59 ± 0.18 mm for VC and 9.17 ± 0.18 mm for BL, with no
statistically significant differences being found for the tests performed when
comparing the right and left eyes and the sex of the animals. The retinas show a
holangiotic and tapetal vascular pattern. The data obtained were submitted to
statistical evaluation using the t test and ANOVA. The values found through
ophthalmological evaluation and ocular ecobiometry in coatis serve as a
physiological reference for the species. | eng |

as regiões do Brasil.
bulbo do olho.
ultrassonografia (US) modo B e oftalmoscopia indireta.
animais. As retinas apresentam padrão vascular holangiótico e tapetal.
