The synchronous generator is a voltage source with constant frequency that provide power for a load. The voltage and current levels at the generator terminals are related to the excitation system that provides direct current, inducting a magnetic field, in the windings of the generator. Under-excitation of the generator can lead to serious problems, such as the sinking of voltage at terminals, loss of capacity to generate active power, heating of the machine and consumption of reactive power. In this way, it is necessary to study and develop methodologies that protect the machine against these undesirable problems. Thus, the present study intends to demonstrate a technique of detection of total loss of excitation in synchronous generators. The technique is based on the extraction of wraps from the current and voltage signals at the generator terminals through a morphological filter.
