A Revolução Farroupilha em “Santa Maria da Bocca do Monte” (1835-1845): atuação do Tenente-Coronel José Alves Valença
Abstract
A Revolução Farroupilha (1835-1845) é uma temática que gerou um grande número de estudos. Contudo, a partir de pesquisas bibliográficas sobre o tema, percebe-se uma lacuna em relação a estudos sobre a região central da Província de São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul, precisamente a freguesia de Santa Maria da Bocca do Monte, então distrito da Vila de São João da Cachoeira. Assim, a presente investigação teve por objetivo evidenciar a participação de Santa Maria na Revolução Farroupilha (1835-1845), tendo por eixo de observação a atuação do Tenente-Coronel José Alves Valença, figura influente da elite local e regional. A partir de Valença visa-se demonstrar a participação da elite local, composta por estancieiros, militares, comerciantes, imigrantes europeus e sacerdotes, e a suas redes sociais e familiares. Nessa perspectiva, pretende-se entender como Santa Maria vivenciou o período de conflito e também compreender a sua ligação com a Farroupilha. O interesse por tal temática surgiu a partir das atividades como bolsista de iniciação científica PROBIC/FAPERGS/UFSM, no projeto de pesquisa História Platina: Fronteiras, Migrações, Sociedades e Poder, especialmente a partir da leitura do livro “Cronologia Histórica de Santa Maria e do Extinto Município de São Martinho 1787-1930”, escrito por Romeu Beltrão em 1958, onde se observou uma abordagem superficial do período da Revolução Farroupilha. Com isso, foi realizada uma pesquisa para levantar indícios sobre a Guerra dos Farrapos em Santa Maria, para que a partir de pesquisas documental e bibliográfica fosse possível entender a construção da narrativa histórica da Revolução Farroupilha em Santa Maria e compreender a atuação da elite local no conflito e na República Rio-Grandense. Deste modo, contribuir para uma compreensão mais ampla desse período da história, apresentando a atuação da região de Santa Maria.
