Literatura Steampunk no Brasil: origens, mundos e exposições

Abstract

This dissertation examines the literary production of the Steampunk genre in Brazil, presenting its roots and its insertion into the contemporary cultural scene. The study begins with a theoretical review of the genre, exploring its origins in 19th-century science fiction, with authors such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and the consolidation of Steampunk in the 1980s through the works of K.W. Jeter, Tim Powers, and James Blaylock. The theoretical framework outlines the origins of Steampunk and establishes its key elements, including steam-based technology, retrofuturistic settings, and social critique. The methodology adopts a structuralist approach, analyzing the narrative elements of Brazilian Steampunk works based on Cândida Vilares Gancho’s definitions of plot, characters, time, space, and setting. This research also discusses the Proto-Steampunk literature in Brazil, focusing on precursor works O Doutor Benignus (1875) and A Rainha do Ignoto (1899), which anticipate themes and styles associated with the genre. Subsequently, it examines the beginnings of Steampunk in Brazil, highlighting the creation of the Steampunk Council and the first anthologies, followed by an exploration of modern Steampunk production in the country. Finally, the dissertation addresses the conception and organization of the Exposição Steampunk Brasileiro, both physical and virtual, which aims to underscore the cultural relevance of the genre and its manifestations in literature and other arts.
