O formato MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging = Catalogação legível para computadores)
desenvolvido pela Library of Congress (EUA) a partir da década de 1960, chegando ao MARC 21 no
final de 1990, é um conjunto de padrões amplamente utilizados para representação e exportação de dados
bibliográficos em formato legível por máquina. Sua principal finalidade é a importação e exportação de
dados de diferentes instituições através de programas de computador.
Um registro MARC é composto por três elementos: estrutura do registro, indicação de conteúdo
e conteúdo dos elementos que compõem o registro.
A estrutura do registro é uma implementação da American National Standard para o intercâmbio
de informação bibliográfica (ANSI/NISO Z39.2) e ISO 2709.
A indicação de conteúdo é formada por códigos e convenções estabelecidas para identificar e
caracterizar os dados dentro do registro e permitir sua manipulação.
O conteúdo dos elementos que compõem o registro MARC é definido por padrões externos ao
formato, tais como: International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD), Anglo-American
Cataloguing Rules, 2ª edição (AACR2), Library of Congress Subjects Headings (LCSH) ou outros
códigos usados pela instituição criadora do registro.
Este “Manual de livros no padrão CCAA2R2002 e formato bibliográfico MARC 21”, 2ª edição,
revista e atualizada, é o resultado de estudos desenvolvidos pela Comissão de Estudos em Representação
Descritiva e Temática (CERDT), e tem como objetivo a padronização dos registros bibliográficos na
Base de Dados do Sistema de Bibliotecas da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (SiB-UFSM).
