O estudo foi realizado junto às empresas de serviços contábeis de Santa Maria - RS, cujo quadro funcional é superior a 9 funcionários, no período correspondente ao primeiro semestre de 2006. O objetivo geral deste estudo foi demonstrar a importância de investir no conhecimento, no aperfeiçoamento e na motivação para valorizar o capital intelectual nas empresas. A pesquisa buscou conhecer como as empresas de serviços contábeis estão investindo no capital intelectual, através de uma entrevista estruturada com o responsável de cada empresa. A realização desta pesquisa permitiu concluir entre outros aspectos que as maiores empresas de serviços contábeis de Santa Maria, possuem em seu perfil um quadro funcional predominante do sexo feminino, e em sua maioria são formadas por sócios do sexo masculino. A sistemática de trabalho utilizada nas empresas contábeis de Santa Maria, influencia no conhecimento adquirido da equipe. Também a motivação da equipe realmente influencia, tanto na produção como no crescimento intelectual de cada funcionário. Concluiu-se que a troca do conhecimento é importantíssima para o crescimento das organizações contábeis e para que isso ocorra o funcionário deve ter consciência desta necessidade. A grande maioria das empresas de serviços contábeis disponibilizam aos funcionários, dentro do horário de expediente, algumas horas de estudo pois isso trará um crescimento intelectual para a empresa. Também dentre as entrevistadas todas tem acesso a um programa de informática específico, e freqüentam cursos de atualização disponíveis no mercado. Estas empresas, que investem em capital intelectual, têm como objetivo principal se destacar e obter reconhecimento pela qualidade de seus serviços.
