dc.description.abstract | The insight that the media have an influence on society (and vice versa) allows the setting of media productions as focal points in the construction and reproduction of collective mindset, being an essential tool for maintaining political-economic and power structures. Therefore, the investigation of these aspects is essential to understand the socio-cultural dynamics of the real world. Based on discursive analysis, this work aims to study social perceptions regarding the LGBTQIA+
community proposed by entertainment products, specifically in the sitcom Modern Family (2009), using the concept of socio-discursive imaginaries, by Patrick Charaudeau (2017). Contextually, the work ponders on the dynamics between media and society, presents considerations about sitcoms and, finally, examines the empirical object Modern Family (2009) and its construction. Thus, categorizing socio-discursive imaginaries, the paper sought to identify judgments regarding the group (LGBTQIA+ community) in three seasons of the series, reflecting how those are constructed and evolve (or not) throughout the plot. Regarding the results, it was found that the perceptions related to imaginaries of “Femininity/Masculinity”,
“Sexuality” and “Promiscuity” were constructed from the development of the psyche and behavior of the characters in the series, while the categories “Heteronormativity”, “Hostility” and “Family Relations” emerged in situations faced by the characters, based on the opinions of third parties and tensions external to them. Furthermore, it was discovered that the discourse on the series regarding the LGBTQIA+ community has, actually, evolved over the years, becoming less pejorative and generalist. | eng |
